Well, tomorrow is the Top Gun Triathlon at Ft. Desoto Park. I have been training for it and looking forward to it ever since Morton Plant, but, duh, I never got around to registering.
I often wait until the last minute to register for road races, deliberately, because my schedule is often somewhat chaotic, and I don't want to register early and then discover that I can't make it. While it is certainly more expensive to register late, if I cannot do a race, it is even more expensive to lose the entire registration fee. That's why I do it. Anyway, that was a bad strategy this time, as the race filled up before the 4th of July. I just didn't know it. When I did try to register, it had been full a while. That seldom - almost never - happens with running races.
So, lesson learned.
Fortunately, the Publix Family Fitness Triathlon is right around the corner on August 22nd, and it is also at Ft. Desoto Park, and it is almost the same distance. I hear excellent reports about it, and it is part of the Family Fitness Series. So, if I like the race, I'll probably do the whole series next year.
I was really looking forward to doing a race there because I had done a tri there back in the 80's.
So, I'll adjust my training to plan for Aug. 22nd. In the meantime, I'll do the last race of the Take the First Step Summer 5k Series at Al Lopez Park this coming Wednesday. That will be an excellent speed workout.
Good luck to all at the Top Gun Triathlon. I may go to the race to take pictures, which I will post here. I imagine there is something to be learned from watching, anyway, if only to reinforce my disappointment enough to impress upon my brain the need to register early from now on.
