2010 Gasparilla Marathon Will be the Last

On Sunday Gasparilla Race Director Susan Harmeling announced the 2010 Gasparilla Marathon will be the last. In fact, the marathon and half marathon actually raise more money than the shorter races; however, the marathon puts a great burden on the City of Tampa in a time of budgetary shortfalls. A Minnesota teacher has come up with an idea that could revolutionize classrooms.
This idea should be implemented in every classroom. I know, if I was the student, I would be more effective it my teacher tried this new idea, and I would love that it could help me burn more calories, too. This teacher's students stand all day, and they like it. There is even a foot swing under the desk to provide an outlet for fidgeting. Brilliant!

Popularity of Halfs Continues to Grow

Since 2003, the half marathon has continued to be the most popular race distance, and in 2006 and 2007 the number of participants grew by 10 percent each year according to Running USA’s State of the Sport Report Part III. That would account for the increase in the number of half marathon events. The number of halfs increased 14.5 percent between 2006 and 2007.

Tour de Village 5K & 1 mi Fun Run

On any given Saturday morning many runners put in their miles on the sidewalks of Carrollwood Village, but today about 200 runners participated in the Tour de Village, a 5k race sponsored by the Phase I, II, and III Carrollwood Village Homeowners Associations.
The surprise for many people is that this is, in fact, an off road race, yet the entire race takes place in the Village.

Tampa Urban Dare an Amazing Race

The highlight? Weaving through the crowds at the Gasparilla Art Festival as we ran down Franklin Street in downtown Tampa in search of the ArtLoud art installation. I am an avid fan of Amazing Race (Sun. night at 8p.m. on CBS), and I felt just like I was on the show.  Wearing my race number and dressed like my daughter and teammate, Wendy, it was  clear to onlookers that we were not there to view the art. They weren’t surprised to see us, however, because 74 other teams were also navigating the downtown and Ybor areas in search of checkpoints and dares.
